Fragrant Roses, Glorious Beauty, Spreading the Dharma and Goodness — Venerable Master Guru of Hui-Lin Temple Honored as "Royal Rosarian"

Portland’s Rose Festival is renowned across the United States and internationally. Every early summer in June, a series of celebratory events—such as the Grand Floral Parade, the selection of the Rose Festival Queen, the knighting of Royal Rosarians, and the Dragon Boat Races—bring vibrant colors and youthful energy to the city. Among these, one event stands out with its regal grandeur and elegance: the annual Royal Rosarian Knighthood Ceremony.

The 2014 Royal Rosarian Knighthood Ceremony was grandly held on the morning of June 6 at the Oregon Garden Plaza. Upon entering the venue, one was greeted by Rose Ambassadors dressed in distinctive white uniforms, white hats, and white gloves, ready to welcome guests to the elegantly arranged ceremony. The event commenced with a solemn musical performance, modeled after the British royal military ceremony. That day, a total of 51 distinguished guests were nominated and honored as “Royal Rosarians” by the Royal Rosarian Association. Amidst warm applause and cheers, they were escorted into the ceremony by Royal Rosarians. The candidates for the 2014 Rose Festival Queen were also invited, adding a striking presence to the event. All attendees stood solemnly to sing the national anthem and offer prayers of blessing. The 2013 Rose Festival Queen, Hannah Rice, wearing her rose crown, entered the venue accompanied by Mark R. Smith, Prime Minister of the Royal Rosarian Association, to bestow the knighthood upon the 51 honorees.

The honored guests came from various industries, all recognized for their outstanding contributions in their respective fields and their dedication to public welfare and charity. Among them, one particular honoree stood out—Venerable Master Guru, the abbot of Hui-Lin Temple. He was the only individual in the century-long history of the Royal Rosarian Knighthood Ceremony to be nominated and honored in a religious capacity. Disciples of Hui-Lin Temple also joyfully attended the event to witness the occasion.

Since founding his first temple in the U.S. in 2006, Master Guru has been invited by the Portland-Kaohsiung Sister City Association to lead his disciples in blessing ceremonies for the annual Dragon Boat Eye-Dotting Ritual—a tradition he has upheld for eight years. His contributions have earned widespread respect and admiration from the Portland city government, the Portland-Kaohsiung Sister City Association, and the community. Every year, he organizes more than ten blessing ceremonies for the public, performs ancestral liberation rites for Chinese ancestors at Lincoln Memorial Park, and conducts meditation health esoteric teachings that promote physical well-being, healing, and spiritual enhancement. His efforts help individuals restore their physical and spiritual health and improve their quality of life, ultimately guiding them toward enlightenment. Because of his long-standing dedication to community service and outstanding contributions, the Royal Rosarian Association nominated him for the prestigious “Royal Rosarian” title.

Upon receiving the honor, Master Guru expressed deep gratitude, stating that he felt truly honored. He thanked the Portland-Kaohsiung Sister City Association, the Portland city government, and the Royal Rosarian Association for their recognition and support. He also expressed his heartfelt appreciation to his disciples and followers for their unwavering support over the years. While spiritual practitioners should not seek fame or material gain, he acknowledged that this honor signifies the mainstream American society’s recognition of his dedication to Buddhism, public service, and charity. He felt gratified to contribute to society and assist the U.S. government in its charitable and public welfare efforts.

Master Guru emphasized that the core principles of the Great Treasury Meditation Health Esoteric Dharma revolve around cultivating compassion and wisdom to benefit oneself and others. Through dedicated practice, one can develop a compassionate heart, attain physical health, and achieve great wisdom while using esoteric meditation teachings to perform good deeds and serve the community. He pledged to continue leading his disciples and followers in providing social services, community care, public welfare, charity, spiritual purification, healthcare, and education.

Roses embody both beauty and love. Since its establishment in 1912, the Portland Royal Rosarian Association has served as goodwill ambassadors, using the fragrance of roses to symbolize the city’s warm welcome to guests from around the world. They promote the beauty and love of Portland, known as the “City of Roses,” fostering international friendships and supporting various global cultural exchanges. The knighthood of Royal Rosarians not only honors the recipients for their outstanding contributions but also encourages them to embody the “spirit of the rose”—spreading seeds of beauty and love throughout the world.

Let us wish Master Guru continued success in his Dharma propagation, charitable endeavors, and public service!
